FACTOR OF SAFETY RELATED TO SLOPE STABILITY IN MINING.

Factor of safety: Factor of safety is defined as the ratio of the resisting force (T) due to shear strength of rock mass to driving force (o) due to shear stress.
Resisting Force (T) Shear strength
FOS = --------------------- = --------------------
Driving Force (o) Shear stress

FOS indicates the ratio of the sum of the total forces which the material of the slope is capable to mobilise due to its strength along the slip surface to the sum of the actual forces tending to slip the slope.
To improve FOS (1) Effective drainage of slope to reduce hydrostatic pressure (driving force) (2) To reduce weight of the material at the top of the slope ( again to reduce driving force). This can be achieved by proper benching and reduction of height of the slope with low slope angle which has to be determined by scientific geotechnical investigation of different strata encountered in pit.

MINES ACT: Mines Act is an act of Parliament. It is an act to amend and consolidate from time to time the law relating to regulation of and providing health,safety,and welfare of the person employed in a mine. The act regulate the working condition and environment with the view to make work more humane. It provides for the measures to prevent accident,occupational diseases and also provides some basic amenities to the mine workers. It also provides system of inspection of mines for enforcement of legislation.

MINES REGULATION: Under section 57 of Mines Act 1952, empowers the central government to make regulation, by a gazette notification consistent with the act for the safety of the mine and person employed therein. Regulation deals with the technical aspects of mining for providing possible dangers while working.

GEOLOGICAL RESERVES:

PROVED RESERVES(MEASURED RESERVES);
When estimation is based on sufficient data of sampling and analysis on detailed exploration by regularly and closely spaced boreholes. The margin of error is limited to 0 to 20% . This forms the base for investment decision. Distance of spacing is 200m.

PROBABLE OR INDICATED RESERVES:
When estimates is based on partly from sample analysis and partly from reasonable geological projection. Widely spaced drill holes, pit trenches etc. upto 1000m. The margin of error permissible 20-30%.

POSSIBLE OR INFERRED RESERVES.
When estimation is based on assumed continuity of ore from geological evidences or widely spaced exploration. upto 1000m to 2000m. The marginal error in estimation is 30 to 50%.

HAUL ROAD VIS-À-VIS PRODUTIVITY:
Transport cost of any surface mine projects contribute about 30 to 35% of total mining cost and 40% of total capital investment as a major equipment.
Good Haul road result in:
a) reduce fuel consumption
b) longer tyre life
c) less dumper down time
d) less accidents
e) increase production
f) safe working condition
g) less b/d and maintenance cost.
h) Operational safety
i) Minimizing cycle time
j) Increasing efficiency.
